[This took him like six times to actually put down on paper. And he still doesn't think it's a good idea.]

"Obviously," but he felt his point was still perfectly valid so he didn't elaborate.

If one more close and trusted person came forward with magic and a sob story about how they had to hide it from him, he was seriously going to hit them.

"If she's telling the truth, and I believe she is, it wouldn't be fair of me to hold the future against her."

He was silent for a moment, groping around for a diplomatic response.

"She turned against Camelot because she felt nobody there would support her. Morgause offered her what we didn't," he said finally. "Even if she is lying, if she's an Inmate, then she wouldn't be here if she couldn't change. Either way I don't think either of us should turn our backs on her."

Arthur looked up at him finally. "I'm tired of questioning her honesty already. If you know something, then say it. If you don't, then hold your tongue until you do."

Merlin wanted to throw something at him for a moment, but it passed.

"I have duties in the Infirmary, sire," he said - using the sort of detached tone he only ever used around visiting dignitaries to show a sense of decorum. "With your leave?"

The prince watched him for a moment, unsure of that tone, before waving his hand lightly. "Go on."

[Charles listened and paused a beat before answering, churning through all that, not sure if Arthur should know that traditionally, Morgan Le Fay was certainly an enemy to him.

But he was a different Arthur, this was an incredibly unique situation, and he wanted to believe Erik could change here, too. Who was he to deny that Morgana might have the same chance?]

"Maybe there is. I'd hesitate to say there's a genuine purpose to things like this, but maybe this is your chance to alter the future. And her chance at playing a better part in it."

[The concept would be lost on Arthur anyway. Since if he knew the whole of those stories, then he wouldn't take them with anything more than a grain of salt. Since Merlin had nothing to do with his birth, was younger than him, and he was raised in court not as someone's bastard ward. To name a few disparities.]

"Merlin said she would not be here, if she is lying, as an Inmate if she could not change."

"I'd like to think almost anyone can change." [Except for say, Hitler or probably Shaw, but both of those references would mean nothing to him.]

"How is she handling the news that you obviously survived the incident she made a deal for?"

"She seemed shocked. Understandably."

"And she isn't planning on turning right back around and going home?"

[He didn't think of that. But he also made his deal, saw it come true on the Camelot side and then came here, so. Who knows.]

"Can she even do that?"

[Charles shrugged.] "Did Morgana play a part in saving you from what happened?"

"Not that I'm aware of. But I also just learned of how involved Merlin was." [And turns out, that little idiot is still an idiot.]

It is possible to encounter a situation where you must choose between behaving honorably and surviving.

[Oh good god Merlin JUST TELL HIM EVERYTHING YOU'RE DIGGING A DEEPER GRAVE FOR YOURSELF BRO. :C]

"Then maybe her being here influenced how that played out, and the timestreams's just messy." [After a beat, he adds:] "Or it might not have. I mean, I hesitate to say anything as 'this definitely happened' given the nature of this place."

[This is a sad and true fact.]

"I can't hold a future crime against her. It wouldn't be fair."

"It wouldn't." [He shrugged slightly again.] "I suppose my best advice would be to make the most of what you've been given. Use it as an opportunity to try and change the future yourself."

[Arthur nodded slightly.]

"Thank you, Charles."

"You're welcome. Are you going to be alright?"
