It's selfish. Especially when there's more depending on you than just your own life.

It's cowardly. No man wants to follow another that isn't willing to lay down his life in their defense.

It's not. A good leader doesn't throw away his own life or the lives of his troops for his personal honor when there's a less-honorable way for all of them to go home at the end of the day.
